[Situation] - About ½ mile W.N.W.[West North West] from Ravelston House - A handsome country mansion in a castellated style of Architecture with a handsome garden and neatly laid out demesne attached. This property with some adjoining lands were bequeathed by a [former]proprietor, for charitable purpose and is now under the management of the Edinburgh Presbytery An old wall, a little to the east of the building has an archway surmounted by a coat of arms which bears the date 1626. "On the South-east boundary of the parish at the foot of
"Corstorphine Hill. stands Craig-Crook, the residence of
"the Right Honourable Lord Jeffrey. Viewed from the Queens-
"ferry Road the ancient looking mansion, with the wood covered

"John Strachan Esqr. of Craigcrook in this parish about the
"year 1720 mortified his estate of above £300 per Annum.
" At certain managers to be applied by them in relieving the necessities
" of poor old men women & orphans. The annual produce of this
"mortification has greatly increased and the amount is dedicated
" to the payment of annual sum of £8.0.0. each to a number of
"poor old men & women in the city of Edinburgh. The mansion
"of Craigcrook has been long Known as the residence of the Aristarch
