"The extreme length of the parish may be about a English mile, its breadth 3 miles at an average. It is bounded on the south by the water of Wype, which separates it from the parish of Avondale; and for a considerable way on the west side, it is washed by the river Avon, which seperates it partly from the parish of Avondale and partly from the parish of Glassford and which river intersects the parish near the centre, where it is narrowest, and then continues to bound it on the other side, from the parish of Dalserf, to its utmost extremity on the north. OS1/21/55/51 TUMULUS (Mount Pisgah) Tumulus. Mount Pisgah New Statistical Account. James Hamilton, Cot Castle. James Allan, West Mains. Thos. Hamilton, Inspector of Poor. Revd. H. Dewar. 024.09 "About two years ago (from 1846) the farmer of West Mains when removing a cairn of stones from an artificial mound on the banks of the Avon, near Cot Castle, for the purpose of draining, he found, after removing the stones, a fine rich black soil some yards deep. It turned out to have been an ancient Roman Tumulus, upon removing all the stones and coming to the bottom of the cairn, the workmen found a great many urns, some of them in a fine state of preservation, they contained pieces of burned bones and black ash. This tumulus is little more than a mile distant from the Old Roman Military Road from Ayr to Edinburgh". New Statistical Account.
OS1/21/55/51 "Plasgach, (gael), Gashed, Cut Abounding in gashes", In removing a stone cairn at Cot Castle, on the banks of the Avon, there was discovered a number of sepulchral urns, elegantly ornamented with flowers and figures, and differing materially from the rude productions of the kinds as commonly to be met within the burial places of the Celtic or Danish inhabitants. This cairn or Tumulus was little more than a mile distant from the Roman Way, and we may suppose it to have been raised over the ashes of some Roman colonist long settled in the neighbourhood. Caledonia Romana p 259
OS1/21/55/52 Tumulus (continued) Mount Pisgah xx1v-9 trace 2 the mound is ploughed over and falls so slightly to the bottom that the top of it cannot, properly be represcuted like an ordinary artificial embankment or slope. The Tumulus and Knoll are now almost as one mound in appearance. The bottom of the knoll is shown by a yellow mark. "Mount Pisgah", as a name applies to both Tumulus and Knoll, and should be retained. "Pisgah" is well known as being spelt according to the Pisgah in Deuteronomy 24th-1st.

An old estate map of proprietor's. 024.09 "Under the head of antiquities, in this parish, may be mentioned the remains of two old castles still visible on the banks of the Avon: known by the names of the Coat or Cat Castle, and Ringsdale Castle, both built on precipitous rocks overhanging the river, but excepting their names and ruins, nothing more remains of them, as history and tradition are entirely silent concerning them". New Statistical Account. Upon the authority of the farmer of "Cot Castle", farm, who seems to be the only person that can point out the site, this Castle ("Cot Castle") stood on an artificial mound about a chain's distance north of the farm house, at the place marked (+). He found, about 20 years ago, a dry (put together without mortar) foundation wall of stone, 7 feet thick, on the south east
OS1/21/55/54 Site of Cot Castle (continued). xx1v-9 trace 2 of the mound, and also at the place written on trace , a foundation wall 7 feet thick, and about 12 feet long, found here about 20 years ago". This wall was built with mortar, and there were, at the time it was found, a faint appearance of a wall of the same length each side in the form of a square, which is by some, supposed, from its resemblance to a Cot, to have been the real origin of the name. "Coat", is, upon the authority of Mr Hamilton the farmer, and Mr Hamilton, the Inspector of Poor. A scotticism of Cot. Until recently this name was spelt Cott by the proprietor's agent, but in all documents of the present time, it is spelt Cot. From the appearance of the mound and some slight remains of a ditch, on the north side of it, there is reason to think that the place pointed out by the farmer is the site of the Castle.

"Glasford Mill" is close to the bridge, in Glasford Parish, and the name of the bridge is generally known in the parish. It also gives the same name to the houses east of "Avonside", on the side of the T. P. Road. This name was not written on the traces of Glasford, owing to the "Glasford Mill" being beside it, but in this parish it is as necessary to retain the name as any other in the parish. It would be better, even in Glasford Parish, to adopt this ("Glasford") to the bridge and drop Glasford to the mill. But both are well known, proper names, and should, if possible, be retained. The road surveyor for the T. P. Road gives the name "Glasford Bridge" to the bridge over the Avon, on the line of the T. P. Road from Ayr. This bridge is commonly called the "Glasford Bridge" as the houses near it are but the leet authorities agree to the name, properly, belonging to the bridge leading into Glasford Parish.

Leiper, St Lawrence Chapel. D. McAllum, Over Tweedieside. John Allison, Goslington. Thos. Hamilton, Inspector of Poor. Caledonia Romana (see description of "tumulus", plans 24-9). Chalmers Caledonia, Vol 1 p73. 024; 030; 031 "The old Roman Military Road from Ayr to Edinburgh, which runs through this parish, commonly known to the people as the "Deil's Causeway". This road, in some places, is still outire, very rudely paved with large stones; in other places it has been completely erased by the country people". New Statistical Account. The remains of this Roman Road, where it enters the parish on the western boundary, coming from "Drafan", in Lesmahagow Ph, may be distinctly traced by some of the causewayed stones appearing on the surface of the ground. These remains exist where the land is bad, or has been planted with trees. As stated by Mr. J. Hamilton of Bogside, and Mr. R. Leiper of "Chapel", both nearly 90 years of age, the Roman Road was used by horsemen between 70 and 80 years ago, and they, consequently remember the site, where owing to cultivation, it is now erased. At those places written "Site of Roman Road" (shown in a red dotted line) the site has been pointed out by the above named authorities. None of the causewayed stones are to be seen at these places marked "site". At places written "Remains of Roman Road", (shown in a black dotted line) the large rough stones of the causeway appear, at intervals, on the surface of the ground. On no part of the line of road, do causewayed stones appear regular and compact, numerous stones have been taken from every part of it in this parish, - as pointed out on the ground, by Mr.J. Hamilton of Bogside, Mr. J. Thomson of Dykehead, from the point where it enters the parish, on the western boundary, to the Ph. Road (xx1v-14 trace 4) the remains are seen in a plantation after passing through which into the arable ground, it forms a strip of rough pasture in two arable fields. From the west side of Ph. Road - xx1v-14 trace 4, to within about 9 chains south east of "St Lawrence Chapel", the remains of the causeway
OS1/21/55/63 "From the station at "Castledykes" (in Carstairs Ph), there went off a original road, athwart Clydesdale, which was , perhaps, intended to form a communication, between the western road and the estuary of the clyde, this vicinal road, probably, passed the clyde, near Lanark", thence "leading by "Tanhill", along the north side of "Blackwood" inclosures. (both in Lesmahagow Ph) to Dins-hill: it thense passed to the south of Hazalaslew, crossing "Kype Water" at Sandford (near the boundary between Stonehouse, and Avondale) and coarsed along the south side of Avondale, by Wellsley, and Westlingbank, towards the gorge at Loudon-hill", Chalmer's Caledonia. Vol 1 P. 138 The site or remains of Roman milestones on this road in Stonehouse Ph., are not known, or have never been heard of.
OS1/21/55/64 Roman Road (continued) Plans xx1v-13 and 14, xxx-4 and xxx1-1. are visible in a plantation, through which it is partly used as an occupation road for carting away felled timber. After leaving the plantin, it again forms a strip of r. pasture interspersed with the caliseloayed on the side of an arable field. From the last point described - at "St Lawrence Chapel". xx1v-13 trace 6. to the Ph road leading to "Sandford" (xx1v-13 trace 5), as pointed out by Mr. R. Leiper of "Chapel", the "Site" is shown as far as the parish road on east side , or margin, of trace 5. xx1v-13, and from the west side of this road, through a portion of rough pasture the remains are sean by numerous causeway stones on the ground; from here to the corner of the Ph. road (xx1v-13 trace 5) the site, well remembered by Mr. Leiper, is shown. From the point where it is now a parish road to "Heathery rig", is well known as being the catual Roman Road, better known as the "Deil's Causeway". There is nothing remarkable in its appearance where it becomes a parish road , being like the other ordinary roads of the parish. From "Heatheryrig" (xxx-4 trace 3) to the point where it leaves the parish is doubtful - Mr Leiper states that he remembers the causeway on the present Ph. Road as far as "Blackscroft". (forest's Co. Map shows the roman road in character farther west than "Blackscroft". Mr. J. Allison of Goslington says the "Deil's Causeway" was where the present Ph. Road is, and that it crossed the kype at an old bridge, where the ford was formerly, about 3 chains north of the present bridge. Mr. Donald McAllum, "Over Tweedieside", and Mr J. Miller, merchant, strathaven, believe it to have crossed the kype , at the place shown in pencil (xxx-4 trace 3). This point would most likely be correct, as it would be in a more direct line to "Craigmuir", and "Mellslay", in Avondale Parish. From the western boundry of the parish to "Heathery Rig" the roman road is almost straight
