TOLLCROSS HOUSE | Tollcross House Tollcross House Tollcross House Tolcross House | Estate Map Meikleham's Map Mr McFeat, Post Master, Tollcross J. Dunlop Esqr. Pr. | 006.16 | A large mansion having well laid out garden & pleasure grounds attached. Occupied by the proprietor J. Dunlop Esqr. The Offices of the "House" are at the Avenue gate on the side of the road leading to Shettleston. Formerly there was a small villiage called "Little Tollcross" where the offices now stand. The name is now entirely obsolete. There seems to be no reason for the mode of spelling given by the proprietor, except that he adopts it himself. The origin of the name is from a Toll which the Lord of the Manor formerly levied on vehicles, in passing his gate on their way to the Markets of Rutherglen |
