CLYDE IRON WORKS | Clyde Iron Works Clyde Iron Works Clyde Iron Works |
J. Baird Esq [Esquire] Cashier J. Meikleham Esq [Esquire] Manager P. Drew Esq [Esquire] |
011.10 | Large Iron Works consisting of 7 furnaces, having a Foundry and the appropriate workshops and offices attached, also some Fire Clay Works, and a few rows of dwelling houses for the work people. The works was erected in 1779 being one of the oldest in Scotland. As regards the works being the site of a burial ground, I have made every enquiry and can glean nothing that will corroborate the Statistical Account. Messrs Baird and Meikleham have referred to the old papers relative to the founding of the buildings and can find nothing respecting human bones or flagstones having been found. In the neighbourhood of Old Monkland there were human bones & flagstones found about 15 or 16 years ago which the above 2 gentlemen beleive [sic] them to be same as those mentioned in the New Statistical Account and the mistake made by the writer in the name of the place |
FIRE CLAY WORKS [Calderbank] | As above | 011.10 | See above entry for Clyde Iron Works. | |
FULLARTON HOUSE | Mr. Baird Cashier (Clyde Cottage), John Meikleham Esq [Esquire], Manager of Iron Works, P. Drew Esq [Esquire] Carmyle, Val. Roll (1857-8) |
