Postmaster Name on Corner of Street. 025.15 Extends in a S [South] W [West] direction from the Parish Church and parallel to Castlegate. This street from its situation seems to have been connected with the Castle but whence it received its appellation must be still matter of conjecture. It is certain however that a space at the end of the street was in former times covered with broom, and probably was the only "thatch in use for covering houses at the times to which we allude" History of Lanark. It is very irregularly built - both in the formation of its line of street and the size etc. of the houses in it. Some of the modern ones are well built 2 and 3 storeys and slated. But the older houses are very un-uniform - "here one building protrudes there another retires from the view and at every little interval a gable rears its pyramidal head as if in despite of all the rules of taste and order" - History of Lanark
