The Castlegate leads in a S.W.[South West] direction to the castlehill and must have been so called from that ancient fort to which it conducted, this is undoubtedly a very ancient portion of the town. - Hist.[History] of Lanark. Some of the houses are very old. They are in general 2 storeys slated and thatched. Some of the older houses are in a very dillapidated state, but the more modern houses which lie chiefly south of the site of the old Castlegate Port are well built and are principally 2 storeys.- slated and in good repair. |

"The inhabitants of the Burgh attended divine Service in the Chapel which devolved to the Burgh at the Reformation and in which the lofts and galleries were set apart for the Magistrates and Corporation." - Stat.[Statistical] Acct.[Account] of Lanark. It was totally removed in 1777 and before the Reformation it would appear to have been a Chapel of Ease to the old Ph.[Parish] Church. |
