018.10 "A few hundred yards above New Avon Bridge, there is an old Bridge of three Arches, which is said to have been built at a very remote period, at the expense of the Monks belonging to the Monastery at Lesmahagow". Patrick's Directory of Hamilton.
This Bridge has been repaired several times, but the original Arches may be seen from beneath. It is thought to be not less than between 4 & 500 years old. No more authentic information of this Bridge can be obtained in the locality. The Carlisle T.P. [Turn Pike] Road used to cross this Bridge before "Avon Bridge" was made. The Old T.P. [Turn Pike] Road is now kept by the Duke of Hamilton & is Public to the south side of the Bridge.
