017.16 | "In the south side of the Parish, a remarkable stone about 6 feet high, but bearing considerably to one side, gives the name of "Crooked Stone" to the district. It is of freestone, & evidently very ancient, Mr Chalmers notices these bended stones as Cromlechs of Druidical origin." New Statistical Account. "A neighboring Farmer lately set this stone upright" (about 20 years ago) "leaving posterity to wonder why it was called "Crooked Stone." Patrick's Directory of Hamilton. The name it is known by throughout the Parish is as written on Trace. It is about 6 feet high & from a foot to 2 feet in diameter. The part, or end in the ground is about 3 feet in extent & is of a different shape from the portion standing upright, but forms a part of the same stone. It cannot be shewn larger without exaggerating. |
