012.13 An ordinary well about 10 feet deep partly covered, for protection, by flag stones placed over it. It stands on the side of a Public Road between "Low Motherwell" Farm & the village of Motherwell, & is said to have been dedicated to the Lady Mother - the Virgin Mary, & hence the name of the village & the Farms of Motherwell. It is well known in the vicinity as an antiquity but of what date could not be ascertained. The people of Motherwell have an old privilige of drawing water from it. There is a Public Right of way to it from the village of Motherwell, which was recently tried to prevent by the Proprietor of the ground - the Duke of Hamilton, but without effect.
