Descriptive Remarks, or other general observations which may be considered of interest
A considerable town, being the capital of the middle ward of Lanarkshire, occupies a pleasant site on the valley of (Clydesdale-word scored out on record) the Clyde, not far from its confluence with the “Avon”.
“In 1661 the town was by an act of Parliament granted to Duchess Anne. Stripped of these privileges, and made the chief burgh of legality and dukedom of Hamilton. The Duchess, who is styled in old deeds, “High and Mighty Princess”, and still talked of as the good Duchess Anne, and who was a Lady of great talent and beneficence, has acquired the right of electing a town clerk and two bailiffs out of 6, chosen by the council annually. This right, contested in vain in 1732, remained in the hands of the ducal house till the Reform Act of 1832, when Hamilton was made a parliamentary burgh, electing its own council, and sharing in the privilege of electing a member to parliament.” Brown’s directory and handbook of Hamilton. |

Hamilton Palace was originally a square tower, about 20 feet long and 16 feet wide. The old part of the house as it now stands, was erected in 1591; and it was afterwards almost entirely rebuilt about 130 years ago.
"In 1822 additions on an extensive scale were begun under the present Duke. The modern part consists of a new front facing the north, 264 feet in length, and three stories high, with an additional wing to the west."
"The front is adorned by a noble portico, consisting of a double row of Corinthian Columns, each of one solid stone, surmounted by a lofty pediment."

An old house occupied by a number of poor families. Dr. [Doctor] Fairbairn informs me that it was built by the Duchess Anne about the middle of the 17th century as an Hospital, and had been occupied as such till about the beginning of the 18th century when it became disused as an Hospital, and ever since it has been occupied as a dwelling house. There are still 6 or 7 old individuals who receive about £8 per annum from the House of Hamilton in lieu of a house rent, who reside where they choose |
