An old road leading in a westerly direction from Stonelaw Street, and terminating at Mill Street.
The Rev P. Brown and Mr Maxwell, Burgh Auditor, both say that they have heard, in their young days, of this road being named Dins Dykes. It may have passed the gas works and communicated with the Factory Lane which is the road that is poplarly believed, that Queen Mary took in her retreat from the Battle of Langside. The above are the only two authorities I can get to give me any information about Dins Dikes - See Description of "Dins Dikes" in Name Sheets of X.4 1/2500 scale |

Ful. [Fularton's ?] Gazetteer of Scotland
Origines Parochials Scotiae |
010.04 |
A Castle or Stronghold once stood in, or about the centre of this garden as shewn on trace. "It was considered one of the ancient Strongholds of the Kingdom in the struggle between Bruce and Baliol. It fell into the hands of the English and was besieged by Bruce in 1309. It was kept in good repair till a short time after the Battle of Langside, when it was burned by orders of the Regent Moray from revenge on the family of Hamilton." Ful. Gazatteer.
The castle of Rutherglen was an early residence of the Scotch Kings. Several of William's charters are dated there. It was of strength and ranked among the important fortresses of the Kingdom. It fell into the hands of Edward I during the war of succession; was besieged by Bruce, and taken by his brother Edward in 1313.

Two detached Lanes one leading from Main Street to Cathcart St the other leading from the end of Cathcart St, or the east end of Burn Road, to "Burnside Powerlo [Powerloom] Factory" This was anciently called Pauls Road and is popularly said to be the way in which Queen Mary made her return from the Battle of Langside.
I can find no one in Rutherglen that ever heard of it being named Dins Dikes, see Description for Greenhill Road, as mentioned in the Historic extract, but it was, and is to this day popularly known as Pauls Road altho [although] the town authorities have recently named as on trace. |
