This edifice is a parochial church and was built upon the site of an older one which "was founded and endowed by a community in 1484and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the year 1592 it underwent a thorough repair and on the 8th of February 1793 it was destroyed by accidental fire. The steeple belonging to the church projects onto the Trongate forms a striking feature in the street. It was built in 1637.
