On the 4 sides of the pedestal are bas-reliefs representative of the battles Assae and Waterloo and of the more pleasing scenes of the peaceful pursuits of men previous to their soldier life; and the Soldier's Return after battle to his home and kindred.

Printed documents		 006.11 A large and handsome building in the centre of Royal Exchange Square. In front of the edifice is a noble portico with a double row of Corinthian columns. Extending half way on either side is a fine range of pilasters, richly corniced; and from the centre to the end of the building is a colonnade, whose fluted pillars are also of the Corinthian order. The principal apartment in the interior is a magnificent News Room or Reading Room whose high arched roof is supported by two rows of columns of the same character as those outside. In the front division, there are a Post Office, Telegraph Office and Underwriters (-)
