There are three Parochial schools in the parish. The parish church is in " West Quarter" & there is a Quoad Sacra Church in Chapelton, as well as a Free church. This is a remarkable whinstone about 4 1/2 feet high, said to be here for ages. The tradition connected it with it is , that it was carried by a witch, from Strathaven on her thumb, the mark of which may be seen, according to the tradition, on the west side. There is a worn ho [hole] resembling a thumb mark on th [the] side. It is regarded by the peo [people] as a great antiquity. At pres [present] it is principally used as a rubbing post, or stone for cattle. No accounts of the Parish, that have been seen, mention the stone. By the persons of the village near it is known as the "Muckle Stane," but by the more intelligent it is termed the Standing Stone. Either name would easily be identified on[?] plans. |

"There seems to have been a Chapel formerly on the land of Chapelton" Origines Parochiales Scotias. The last named authority, who is about 80 years of age, remembers a Font being dug up at the place marked "Site of Chapelton." The site of the Chapel is not known by any authorities seen or referred to except the last named _ Thomas Shearer, who had it from tradition. No ruins, or any remains of buildings (except that of the Font) have ever been seen at the place marked "Site " etc. The place, however, is known as the "Chapel Sink" from a hollow being here in the ground. "Till within a few years of the ruins of an ancient Castle were to be seen very near the mansion of Hallhill."
New Statistical Account.There are no remains whatever to be seen of this castle. There is a slope on the east side of the site which continues southward of the Castle site & forms a knoll in a Plantation _ 6 chains from the site. The ruins of this castle which does not appear to have any name, were pulled down by the present proprietor's predecessor, about 30 years ago. The old key of the castle is in the possession of the Proprietor of "Hallhill." The site is well known. |

This hill rises abruptly on the east & west sides, & has a conical appearance on looking at it from the south side. It is very prominent from the south & may be seen from a considerable distance. The name is a Scotticism of Topped_ from its narrow top. |

"Three high stones stand upright on a small eminence upon the lands of Avonholm, respecting their origin there are various opinions. They are probably the remnants of Druidical superstition". New Statistical Account. These stones are known simply as the "Three Stones". There is a tradition in the neighbourhood that three Lords were buried here, after being killed while looking on at a Battle. The stones are about 3 1/2 feet high & about as thick as flag stones. They stand upright being firmly fixed in the ground. |

"The ruins of the former Church built in 1633 are still standing in the Grave Yard, where also the Tomb of a martyr is to be seen" New Statistical Account.
The Tomb stands in the Grave yard built into the wall forming also the side of the Ph [Parish] Road. It is about 7 feet high, & bears the following inscription. "To the memory of "the very Worthy Pillar of the "Church, Mr N. Gordon in Earlston, "in Gallowshire. Shot by a Partie of Dragoons on his way to Bothwell Bridge 22d [22nd] June 1679. Aged 65. "Inscribed by his Great Grandson, "Sir John Gordon Bart. 11th June 1772. "Repaired by Sir John Gordon Bart of Earlston, His Representative 1842" There are also some lines in poetry, on the Tomb, detailing the particulars etc of W. Gordon's death. On the side next the road there are a few words on the Tomb addressed to passers by. |

"The ruins of the former church & belfry, built in 1633, are still standing in the grave yard, where also the tomb of a martyr is to be seen" New Statistical Account. The only part of the church now standing, is the west end gable, on the top of which the belfry, minus the bell, stands. The Grave-digger's house is built again it. The grave yard is still used for burying. The martyr's Tomb is against the wall forming the side of the Parish Road. The wall, remaining of the church, is not above the ordinary strength of those of the present day & the church appears to have been but one story high. |
