024.05 | "The ruins of the former Church built in 1633 are still standing in the Grave Yard, where also the Tomb of a martyr is to be seen" New Statistical Account. The Tomb stands in the Grave yard built into the wall forming also the side of the Ph [Parish] Road. It is about 7 feet high, & bears the following inscription. "To the memory of "the very Worthy Pillar of the "Church, Mr N. Gordon in Earlston, "in Gallowshire. Shot by a Partie of Dragoons on his way to Bothwell Bridge 22d [22nd] June 1679. Aged 65. "Inscribed by his Great Grandson, "Sir John Gordon Bart. 11th June 1772. "Repaired by Sir John Gordon Bart of Earlston, His Representative 1842" There are also some lines in poetry, on the Tomb, detailing the particulars etc of W. Gordon's death. On the side next the road there are a few words on the Tomb addressed to passers by. |
