" The present parish of Kilbride, which is sometimes called East Kilbride, to distinguish it from West Kilbride, in Ayrshire, comprehends the parishes of Kilbride and Torrans. The old parish of Torrans obtained its name from the place where the church stood; and that places of location acquired its name from a small earthern mount, which was called the Tor, in the vicinity of the mansion house, and the old church of Torrans. " The circumference of the parish is very irregular and undulating in its outline. In other respects, the shape is that of a sand glass, the breadth in the northern and southern portions is considerable, while it is very much diminished towards the centre. A line drawn across the northern half of the sand glass through its centre from east to west, would give a breadth of very nearly five miles. At one part of the southern half the distance is about five miles from a point on the east, at which a bye-road, leading from the direct Strathavon and Kilbride towards a place called Blackburn crosses the Powmillan rivulet , to the point on the west where the road from Alderstocks to Eaglesham enters the parish of Eaglesham. In the centre of the parish, at the narrowest part, the breadth is not so much as two miles and a half - . From the most southern point beyond Browncastle to the most northern already mentioned, the distance is nine miles and three quarters, being the extreme length of the Parish. - East Kilbride is in the middle ward of Lanarkshire and is bounded on the north by the parish of Carmunnock , and Cambuslang; on the east by Blantyre, Glassford and Avondale ; on the south by Avondale and Loudon; and on the west by Loudon, Eaglesham, and Carmunnock -.

" In the bottom of a very small Cairn which, in 1789 was annihilated in the lands of East Rogertoun the property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton, were found five urns, not of the ordinary shape. They were about 18 inches high, 6 wide at the one end and 4 at the other, both ends were open, they were said by the Workmen to be glazed and ornamented with flowers, and narrower at the middle than at either end. They stood upon smooth stones distant from each other about third? Of a yard and placed in a circular form. The top of each urn was covered with a thin piece of stone. They were all totally destroyed by the rustic laborers, so that not a fragment was preserved."
This cairn was on a slight eminence about 15 chains N. E. [North East] of the farm house called East Rogerton. |

"On this are the remains of a building that measured 73 feet by 63. The ruins of this ancient structure, have, for a long time past supplied materials for the dykes and roads of the neighbourhood. It was built of freestone, but the stones do not appear to have been hewn. Some labourers, about 50 years ago, as they were collecting stones for the above mentioned purposes, discovered among the ruins a pretty large vault, on making this discovery, they were greatly elated with the hopes of finding a treasure, after the more diligent search, however, they found nothing but rubbish. In a few days the subterranean apartment which had been concealed for time immemorial was no more. It is probable that other vaults may lie buried in the ruins, as they have never been thoroughly ??
" This hill is now covered with wood; the spot where the building. "Ure's History
stood is not known. No trace of a building now appears on the surface". Information from ?..
[the following is written sideways on the page]
"In the neighbourhood of Kittochside, there were two ancient fortifications, referred to by Mr. Ure
They stood on two hills now know by the names of Castlehill and Rough-hill. The former is on the north, and the latter to the south of Kittoch; the distance between them is about 200 yards. They have been so well described by Mr. Ure, that it is unnecessary to say more here regarding them, where that since his times the Castle-hill has been covered with trees, and that none of the stones remain on Rough-hill.

New Statistical Account |
016.03 |
Mr. Ure in his History of Rutherglen and Kilbride says, " The Peel which stands on the south bank of Kittoch, is justly entitled to a place among the ancient buildings of Kilbride. The most considerable part of the present edifice was built near two centuries ago, since that time, it has received some additions which contribute greatly to the beauty of the place."
This building is now known by the names " The Peel" and "Peel Castle", the former means a place of the Strength and seems to be an ancient name. It is in good repair, occupied by James Strang Esqr. and the property of the Misses Muir Liverpool. |

The following is copied from Mr. Ure's History of Rutherglen and Kilbride.
" When or by whom these hills (Castle Hill and Rough Hill) were occupied as places of strength cannot easily be discovered. Tradition says they were built by the Romans, but, their elliptical form seems to put a negative upon that report, nor is it certain but that both of them belonged to the same fortification. This is the more probable as there are no remains of building on the Castlehill which might be used as an exploratory mount or Pretorium" See description of Rough Hill |

The following is Mr. Ures description of Mains Castle in his history of Kilbride Parish. " This extensive Habitation of a rich and powerful Family is situated about a mile north of the Kirk - and is wholly in ruins except the Tower which is pretty entire. This like the abodes of the great in former times appears to have been built for defence it is 56 feet high 37 long and 27 broad. At the west end is a dark and dismal vault which seems to have been used as a prison. The wall near the ground is 6 feet in thickness the windows extremely narrow and irregularly placed. This Tower was habitable till about 70 years ago when the roof was taken off to procure slates for some office houses at Torrance it was surrounded by a deep fossa which is yet visible. The chief entry was by a narrow draw bridge on the east and strongly guarded by a beautiful arched gate over which was placed a stone |

- having the Arms of Scotland cut upon it. This stone was about 50 years ago removed to Torrance by order of Col. [ Colonel] Stuart and placed in the front of the house above the chief entry. The old and probably the first edifice of the Mains stood about 70 yards north of the Tower and is now lying in ruins. The fossa within which it was enclosed is more perfect and much larger than the one round the Castle Tower. An aged Yew which stands a few yards to the S.E. [South East] of the Mains is the only tree worthy of notice about the place. The Castle, the age of which is unknown, was probably built by the Cummins before the reign of King Robert the Bruce, at that period nearly 2/3 of the lands of Kilbride belonged to that powerful family but the whole was forfeited by the treachery of John Cummin whom Bruce killed at Dumfries. They were afterwards given to John Lindsay of Dunrode successor to James Lindsay who assisted the King in Killing the Traitor. The family prefering the Mains to Dunrode their ancient family seat near Gourock took up their residence in Kilbride. They flourished in great wealth and splendour till little more than a century ago when the estate was sold to pay the debt which the extravagance of the owner forced him to contract." - Mr. Ure published his History about the year 1793 . The Tower or Castle as it is called which he described is yet standing but the fosse which surrounded it cannot be traced nor are there any traces of the draw-bridge or gate which he mentions. There is an ancient yew tree yet standing at about 3 chains from the Castle and nearly east of it. It is much decayed and is the only tree of the kind near the place. The more ancient building which he describes as being in a heap of ruins is totally removed the foundations can be easliy traced and a double fosse is visible and well defined on the north and east. |

The cairn is now entirely removed and the hill cultivated. Mr. Ure says - contd. [continued] |

This is an eminence about 14 chains north of the village of East Kilbride, it got the name from a market being held on it at a time the plague raged in Glasgow. The neighbouring farmers afraid of catching the infection would not venture nearerto the City withtheir marketable goods which caused the inhabitants of Glasgow to resort to this temporary market, which was held twice a week, this gave rise to the name which still continues. |

Mr. Ure in his history of Kilbride and Rutherglen published in 1793 gives the following acct. [account] of Pickprivick Castle.
" The Mansion- house or Castle of Pickprivick had once been no contemptible building. It was constructed like the houses of the great during the feudal system, with Towers, battlements etc. The whole was about 60 years ago reduced to ruins and nothing now remains but but some searched? rubbish. Not far from the building is an artificial mound of earth which continues pretty entire, it is about 14 feet in height."
This mound is still entire and from it can be seen Mains Castle near Kilbride, but there are no visible remains of the Castle. |

New Statistical Accounts |

This grave is not far from Mount Cameron. Mr Ure in his History of Rutherglen and Kilbride gives the follwing acct [account] of the Lady who was interred in this grave.
" This place ( Mount Cameron) formerly called Blacklaw takes its name from Mrs Jean Cameron a lady of distinguished family, character and beauty. Her zealous attachment to the house of Stuart, and the active part she took to support its interests in the year 1745 , made her well known thro' Britain. Her enemies indeed, took unjust freedom with her name, but what can the unfortunate expect from a fickle and misjudging world? The revengeful and malicious, especially if good fortune is on their side, seldom fail to put the worse construction on the purest and most disinterested motives. Mrs Cameron after the public scenes of her life were over took up her residence in the solitary and bleak retirement of Blacklaw. But this vicissitude so unfriendly to aspiring minds did not throw her into despair, retaining to the last the striking remains of a graceful beauty. She spent a considerable part of her time in the management of domestic affairs. Her whole deportment was consistent with that good breeding, unaffected politeness and friendly generosity which characterise the people of rank in the Highlands of Scotland. She was not remarkable for a more than ordinary attachment to ant System of religious opinions or mode of worship, which is not always the case with the unfortunate. Her brother and his family of all her friends paid her the greatest attentions. She died in the year 1773, and was buried at Mount Cameron among a clump of trees adjoining to the house, her grave is distinguished by nothing but a turf of grass, which is now almost equal with the ground"
There are no trees at present around this grave but there is a clump near it. Altho the ground round the grave is cultivated and frequently ploughed yet the grave was never disturbed. |

This is a small building recently erected on a rock in the centre of Calder called The Grey Mare. There is a wooden bridge from the rock to the left bank of the stream near the end of which is a stone with the following inscription.
"the pangs of life of death itself an o'er The Hermit's weary heart shall throb no more He in this ruin found a home a tomb. Here where decay is robed in thickest bloom of earth when heaven's own soft yet radiant beam, still sheds young beauty on old Calder's stream. Yes here a chastened child of sorrow heard and felt Gods holy word. Reader a few short hours a few more throes of Human Grief thy fleeting days shall close. At the dread moment may the light divine which blest the dying Eremitable shine" |

"Law. A designation to many hills or mounts.
Jamieson
[written under Druids Temple]
I have seen this place, and also consulted with James Pate
who removed the stones, which were largest, from the middle
of the Cairn, the place probably where internment took place.
The object is manifestly the remains of a Cairn of Stones
of which, portions of the heap still remain.- These were are
stones removed of the character of large unhewn masses such
as not found in Druidical Circles. [very unsure of this sentence]
