017.05 This well is hewn out of a precipice rock on the left bank of the Calder near "The Hermitage". The water is clear as crystal and issues from a crevice in rock over the well is a slab of freestone with the following inscription.
" If thy spirit is pure as this crystal spring Stranger drink its water and fearlessly fling The Tiny cup in the bright fairy well
It's magic for thee has no fatal spell.
But enchantment falls on all around
Above below 'his hallow'd ground
And truth lies hid in this mystlie well.
With power each secret thought to tell.
Then pause Stranger pause for if evil dwell.
