William Smith Busbyside James Strang Peel Castle William Reid Wester Kittochside Robert Reid Peelpark New Statistical Account. ?.800 |
016.03 | A considerable mound of earth evidently formed for military purposes, it is situated on the North side of Kittoch and about 7 chains from Rough Hill. The following is copied from Mr. Ure's History of Rutherglen and Kilbride. " When or by whom these hills (Castle Hill and Rough Hill) were occupied as places of strength cannot easily be discovered. Tradition says they were built by the Romans, but, their elliptical form seems to put a negative upon that report, nor is it certain but that both of them belonged to the same fortification. This is the more probable as there are no remains of building on the Castlehill which might be used as an exploratory mount or Pretorium" See description of Rough Hill |
