seeded with fine plantations, but the Southern portion is very hilly and in some places the rocks crop for such an extent that the ground is almost barren, this district is pastoral, and is divided into sheep farms.
The name of this parish is a Gaelic compound, consisting of Cul, the back part or recess, and Tir, the land or country. The village of Culter accordingly viewed from any commanding station in the adjacent valley, appears to occupy the Back part or Recess of the District. - In 1794, a decreet was given by the Lords of Council and Session suppressing the parish of Kilbucho, and annexing part of the same to that of Culter. At Wolf Clyde a curiousity may sometimes be seen, viz the Clyde running into the Tweed. The Vale of Biggar Water, which here stretches between these two rivers is but slightly elevated above the bed of the Clyde. During a flood part of the latter river sometimes finds its way into Biggar Water, and is thereby carried into the Tweed. - The sheep with which our hills are pastured are of the Short or Black faced kind. No other kind has ever been tried, as the grounds are reckoned too hard and bare for rearing a finer species' [New Statistical Account]
By a sentence of the Lords Commissioners of Tiends, in the year of 1794, a considerable part of the parish of Kilbucho in Tweeddale was annexed to Culter, which it borders on the north east. The parish is a long track of land, partly level and fruitful holms, partly upland pastures, lying on the banks of Culter Water, which flowing from the South-west to the north east, falls into the Clyde. That river bounds the district on the west, its eastern limits are the Culter Fells which rise somewhat abruptly from the valley to a height, in certain points, of 2330 feet above the sea [ Origines Parochiales Scotiae] |

'From the Cat Craig the Roman Road proceeds in the direction of Biggar, and about a mile after it has crossed Culter Water, we find a Camp situated on the top of the hill which intervenes between it and the Clyde. There is no water near it and being situated in a plantation the ramparts and ditch are not easily traced. It appears however to have been a rhomboid of 190 by 164 feet.'
(On the ancient camps of the Upper Ward by G.V Irving Esqr)
This camp is situated on the top of a gentle hill which is planted with fir trees and known as the Castle Plantation, the ramparts of the camp are slight but the formation which is rhomboidal can be easily traced on the ground. There is no trace of a ditch perceptible, and the sides of the camp to the N E and N W are slightly curved. This camp has a very meagre appearance as a place for defence, |

There were found at this place (on the farm of Eastfield) a few days ago (March 1859) some splendid specimens of the Quern, or ancient hand mill, one of them is composed of granite finely polished, and fluted at the sides, and the hole in the top for the corn, and in the side for the stick, are very neatly cut; if not added to Mr Sim's museum, they may be seen at the farm house of Eastfield, They were found 8 or 10 inches below the surface of the ground, and some charred wood and freestone scales were turned up at the same place which would lead to the suggestion, that corn had been ground and bread baked on the spot; There are no signs, or remembrance of a house being in any way near this place, which is in a small hollow at the S.W. base of a small knoll, which was formerly a plantation the trees of which are now cut down and the ground is under cultivation, There is a faint trace through the ploughed ground of an artificial formation of an ovate shape, which Mr Gladstone thinks are the remains of a Camp, on the East side where the ground has not been ploughed, but is planted with trees, there.. |

is still standing a portion of earth-work about 4 feet high and 6 feet broad at the base, this is part of the ovate formation mentioned and what Mr Gladstone thinks is part of a camp; Mr Sim of Coulter Mains a local antiquary says that he has heard mention of a camp at this place, but is not certain about the locality. Mr Dicksonof Hartree, the proprietor of the ground, says that he distinctly remembers the plant[ation] at this place, but can not say whether the formation mentioned, was made for protecting the trees or was there before the ground was planted.

Several granite querns or handmills, These most probably were brought from a distance, granite not being one of the rocks of this district which consist of grewache, green stone, amygdate and porphyry. At Culter Park a little further on, a bronze celt, similar to that in Wilson, P 257, class VII, and also to that, fig [figure] 1 Plate 37, in the journal Vol. [Volume] VIII, was found, and is now in Mr Sim's possession'

The articles named above were found near the Cat Craig, or Rock of the battle, they are still to be seen in Mr Sim's Museum at Coulter Mains, who kindly pointed out the site where they were found, and says that the urns found were of a very fragile texture and fell to pieces when exposed to the air, and that the Urns, dagger, querns, and Celt were all found in the vicinity of the place marked on the trace. |

(See Plan for 40.5.Trace 1) From the Cat Craig the Roman Road proceeds in the direction of Biggar, and about a mile after it has crossed Culter Water, we find a camp on the top of the hill which intervenes between it and the Clyde. [Near the] 'boundary of the parishes of Culter and Biggar we find on the line of the Roman Road the house of Causewayend, a most apropriate name, as the [ibes?] would here enter what was till lately the almost impassable morass of Biggar Bog. Through this it must have been impossible to carry a solid carriageway, and this portion of the road was most probably constructedof wood.' (On the ancient camps of the Upper ward of Lanarkshire by G.V.Irving Esqr of F.A.S)
The united road proceeded from the Roman post near Lamington, along the right bank of the Clyde towards Biggar; but except in crossing Biggar Moss where its vestiges are very obvious, few traces of it any where appear.' Chalmers Caledonia P. 135 Vol 1)
'Hence (from Lamington) it has doubtless led still along the right bank of the Clyde; butexcepting in crossing Biggar Moss where its vestiges are discernible enough no traces of it are particularly known' (Roy P. 104)
The track of the old road shewn on Plans 34.13 and 40.1 & 5, was pointed out by A Sim Esqr of Coulter Mains, who ordered one of his laborers, who knew the track, to stake it out where it is not very distinct. This is the oldest road known in the district, it was formerly used as a Mail or Trust road; and Mr Sim supposes this to be the site of the Roman Road, and says that he remembers seeing large stones taken out of the old road near Causewayend, when the Bog was drained. See Gateside and Causewayend on the site of this old road, names whichtend to verify the supposition, that this is the ancient Roman Road, and synonymous with Gateside and Causeway House on the side of the Roman Road in Lamington Parish. |

On the West slope of Eastmains Hill, is a number of peculiar looking ridges which are supposed to be artificial. Mr Sim says they are similar to those in the County of Peebles, and other parts of Scotland, about which, there has been a great deal said and written; some archaiologists consider them to have been thrown up by the ahcients, to witness the games in the valley below, after the style of the amphitheatres; others consider them to be vestiges of ancient agriculture. |

This camp is situated on the South west end of Culterpark Hill, and is now under cultivation and the rampart fast disappearing. It appears to have been defended by a single rampart of considerable stability, and there is a faint appearance of a ditch at the North east end; the hill on the East side is steep, and here the ground is not cultivated but ther eis no appearance of a ditch, and the road mentioned by Mr Irving is not now traceable. The hill is isolated and commands an extensive view. |

This camp is situated on the west end of Snaip hill and commands an extensive view down the valley of the Clyde; the ascent of the hill is steep especially on the East side, and the camp appears to have been strongly fortified by two ramparts on the West side, and two ramparts and a ditch on the East side, the formation of the camps is ovate, and rather peculiar looking at the North and South ends, here the ramparts converge; which may be accounted for by the rocky nature of the ground, which of itself forms a natural rampart, A regular road or path, leads from the West side of the camp in the direction of Culter Water. |

This camp is situated on the East slope of Snaip hill near the road leading from Culter to Birthwood; it appears to have been defended by a single rampart which has now a very meager appearance, having evidently been tampered with by the farmers searching for stones to build fences. The formation is irregular, and the ground around it is drained and under cultivation, and there is no appearance now of the streamlet mentioned by Mr Irving. This is suppoesed to be the camp mentioned by Chalmers (Vol 1.P154.155) 'Opposite Nisbet there is an undoubted remain of Roman construction, Square in its form and capacious in its contents'. |

'At about half a mile to the north-east of the farm house of Nisbet, there is a small iso;ated hill or knoll. At the West the elevation is the highest, and the ascent the steepest and most abrupt, while towards the East the ground slopes gently away. On this hill is situated by far the most complicated series of fortifications I have met with.
That at the west is evidently the principal, and the most strongly entrenched. The arrangements of its gates is remarkable, being situated at a different point in each rampart, so that an enemy would be exposed in passing from one to the other. The smaller entrenchment was evidently intended to prevent a hostile party from establishing itself on the high ground to the East of the larger camp, which it |

might not be convenient to include in the Circle of the entrenchment, but from which the garrison might receive much annoyance. This smaller camp occupies a small eminence, and must necessarily have been carried before an attack could have been made on the principal one from the East. A clearly marked road leads to these fortifications from the same direction but cannot be traced beyond the limits of the hill itself, owing to the intervention of ploughed fields. The supply of water must have been derived from the small stream on the west of the larger fortification. These camps are known in the Country by the name of Cow or Kow Castle. Mr Sim was at first inclined to suppose that it had obtained this appellation from being a place of refuge for the cattle, but on further reflection thins that it ought rather to be traced to the Scotch word, Kow, the twigs of any shrub or plant cut and made into a bundle; thus we have the broom Kow so well known to every curler, the heather Kow, Cowden Knowes etc. I completely agree with this latter explanation, most especially as the Scotch for cattle would not be Cow, but kye'. |
040.06 |
The large camp at the south-west end of the hill is in a good state of preeservation and the ramparts and ditches can be distinctly traced, on the ground, the formation is irregular but appears to have been formidable as a place for defence and securuty, being defended by three distinct ramparts, which extend over the summit of the hill, and can be easily traced, except for a short distance on the West side, where the outer rampart has been destroyed by the farmer when searching for stones to build fences.
The small camp on the North end of the hill appears to have had one rampart only, but the ground around the campo has been ploughed, the rampart is very prominent and easily traced on the ground except for a short distance on the North end where it has been destroyed. |

Opposite the Cow Castle is a small knowe on the top of which there are still to be seen the remains of an artificial earthwork, which from its appearance and the formation of the ground, has evidently been a place of defence, there is no mention made of it in any of the records and it appears to have been overlooked by the local antiquaries, Mr Watson farmer of Snaip says that he has always thought it was the remains of a camp, and Dr [Doctor] Sommers of Biggar a local antiquary says that he thought this was a camp but had never made any investigation about it. The formation is ovate, and there are distinct traces of what appear to be three ramparts on the West side, two on the South and one on the East and North East. |

' The valley to the West of this Cow Castle, though it now consists of good established fields, was in the memory of man an impossible morass, in which a curious place of security had been constructed. As all trace of it has disappeared, I copy the description of it in the Statistical Account.
'A mound of an oval shape, called the Green Knowes, measuring about thirty yards by forty rises about two or three feet above the surface of the surrounding bog. On penetrating into this elevated mass, it is found to consist of stones of all different kinds and sizes, which seem to have been tumbled promiscuously together, without the least attempt at arrangement. Driven quite through this superincumbent mass are a number of piles sharpened at the point, about three feet long, made of oak of the hardest kind, retaining the marks of the hatchet, and still wonderfully fresh. A causeway of large stones connects this mound with the firm ground. All around is nothing but soft elastic moss |

moss, and beneath it too, for on cutting through the bed of the stones you immediately meet with the moss. Near the spot are the remains of some very large trees, and the whole morass may have been at one time a wood'. (on the ancient Camps of the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire by G.V Irving Esqr).
Ther e is no trace of Green Knowe to be seen but the authorities quoted remember it quite well and the site was pointed out my Messrs Watson and Whyte, all of them old residenters in the locality |

This camp is situated about half a mile north from the farm house of Culter Allers, on the East side, and about one eigth of a mile from Culter Water, on a small ridge3 on the side of a hill which separates the Culter Water from Nisbet Burn; the formation is ovate and it is in a good state of preservation, there are three ramparts on the S.W [south west] side and three on the N.E [north east] side; on the East side the inner rampart is not very distinct, but the outer rampart is here very prominent. This camp is defended by a ditch which is in a good state of preservation except at the centre of the East side where it is not |

traceable, and at the N.E [north east] end where the ground appears to have escarped down to the outside of the ditch, which converges on each side into this escarpment.
'On the ridge which separates the Culter Water from Nisbet Burn, immediately outside the enclosures on an eminence separated by a gentle hollow from the steep ascent of Culter Fell there is a strongly fortified camp, with no less than three ramparts clearly and distinctly marked. There is a curious elevation at the North corner of the outer rampart, but whether this is artificial, or a natural feature of the ground I am unable to determine. This camp however labours under the defect that it lies at a considerable distance from any water'. (On the ancient camps of the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire by G.V Irving Esqr). |
