| HOWE GILL | 040 | [Near the] 'boundary of the parishes of Culter and Biggar we find on the line of the Roman Road the house of Causewayend, a most apropriate name, as the [ibes?] would here enter what was till lately the almost impassable morass of Biggar Bog. Through this it must have been impossible to carry a solid carriageway, and this portion of the road was most probably constructedof wood.' (On the ancient camps of the Upper ward of Lanarkshire by G.V.Irving Esqr of F.A.S) The united road proceeded from the Roman post near Lamington, along the right bank of the Clyde towards Biggar; but except in crossing Biggar Moss where its vestiges are very obvious, few traces of it any where appear.' Chalmers Caledonia P. 135 Vol 1) 'Hence (from Lamington) it has doubtless led still along the right bank of the Clyde; butexcepting in crossing Biggar Moss where its vestiges are discernible enough no traces of it are particularly known' (Roy P. 104) The track of the old road shewn on Plans 34.13 and 40.1 & 5, was pointed out by A Sim Esqr of Coulter Mains, who ordered one of his laborers, who knew the track, to stake it out where it is not very distinct. This is the oldest road known in the district, it was formerly used as a Mail or Trust road; and Mr Sim supposes this to be the site of the Roman Road, and says that he remembers seeing large stones taken out of the old road near Causewayend, when the Bog was drained. See Gateside and Causewayend on the site of this old road, names whichtend to verify the supposition, that this is the ancient Roman Road, and synonymous with Gateside and Causeway House on the side of the Roman Road in Lamington Parish. |
