HOPETOUN HALL | Hopetoun Hall | James Martin M.D., John Gill, Co. Map (Forest's). | 049.07 | A large commodious house in the village of Leadhills occupied by Mr. John Gill Mine Surveyor &c. and the property of the Earl of Hopetoun, one of the wings at the north is converted into a chapel in which divine services is regularly performed by a chaplain, principally supported by the Earl of Hopetoun. It is stated in the New Statl. Act. "that the noble family took their title from the Hall," but it has only been built about 100 years, and Dr. Martin states that the title is taken from the Barony, and that the village at one time was called Hopeton or Hopetoun. |
