Mr J Watson Merchant.	046.06	A place where slight cutting in the Parish Road is made it is so called from the circumstance of a party of marauders having been overtaken here by one of the ancestors of the Douglas family. When they were returning to Annandale with plunder cattle etc. and one of their number hanged near this spot.

Statistical Account of Lanarkshire		Upon Mr Irving's farm at Birkcleugh and at the edge of Crawick Moss there is an opening in the ground of about a foot in diameter into which the waters run from the adjacent hills after any heavy rain but whether they are absorbed in the moss at some distance from Holemerry (as the opening is called) or are accumulated under the moss so as to be preparing a miniature exhibition of what took place on the Solway or emerge quietly & unobserved from their subterraneous abode has never been ascertained. Stat acct. of Crawfordjohn Ph 1836 The appearance of this opening in the ground must have considerably altered since the above date. as the pool of water which at present fills it is fully 40 links in diameter
