033.06 | This is one of the few instances in Scotland where Chester [underlined] is applied to the remains of a Roman Camp, the derivation being evidently from the ^Latin^ word Castra - a camp. It is generally believed, by the inhabitants in its vicinity, to have been a Roman Station; although all that remains of the Camp at present are two circular ramparts, 5 feet high and 240 feet in diameter, yet it is generally acknowledged to have had an outer quadrangular enclosure-this, however, has been long since entirely defaced. No antiquities have been found at it. |
Transcriber's notes
In the description of "Chester Hill" the word "derive" appears to have had an "s" at the end which seems to have been obliterated. It should have been "derives".Transcribers who have contributed to this page.
