026.07 | A village about 3/4 mile in length consisting of houses the great majority of which are one storey & thatched with a few slated two storey houses. Its situation is not very central in the parish, it being more that 8 miles to its extreme northern point whereas the distance from it to the southern extremity of the parish is not more than 2 miles, and it is even less than that distance to its western boundary, - it is a baronial burgh, the superiority belonging to one of the branches of the Lockhart family, who derive the title of Baronet from it, in feudal times it was a place of comparatively greater importance than what it now is, - Ballie's courts having been held in it and even capital punishments inflicted during the feudal tenure of the Lockharts, - also between the 12th &13th centuries when the noble family of Sommerville were feudal superiors. |
