Statistical Acct.[Account] of Lanarkshire
018.16 A large irregular shaped block of
whinstone. placed on the verge of a steep
slope in Jock's Gill.The tradition
connected with this stone is that it was
a portion of Samson's Sling-Stane which
bcame detached from its parent block
when the latter was hurled at Glasgow
Cathedral; the larger portion known
by the name of Samson's Sling-Stane
falling into Fiddler Gill (see plan 25-5)
and the smaller portion bearing the
name of Theafal Stane finding a
resting place in Jocks Gill: the
derivation of Theafal Stane cannot be ascetained[ascertained] nor can any thing
authentic be obtained respecting the
history of these stones except the
above tradition which is nothing but the wildest fiction.
