" The parish of Cambusnethan obtained it's name from the location of the old Parish church near the Clyde , where the river makes a beautiful bend. The prefix of the name is obviously the Celtic, Camus which was applied to the bend of a water and has in this, and various other names , been changed to Cambus(underlined); the adjunct to Nethan is supposed to have been derived from the name of some saint, to whom the church was presumed to have been dedicated." - Chalmers' Caledonia
"The parish is bounded by Shotts on the north; Whitburn and West Calder on the east; Carnwath, Carstairs and Carluke on the south; Hamilton, Dalserf, Dalziel and Bothwell on the west. " - New Statistical Account |

This school was erected about 40 years ago by the Trustees of a merchant of Whitburn named Wilson, who left in their hands £!000 for the erection and support of a school at the village of Stane. £320 was expended in the erection of the school and a house for the teacher. £680 remain in the hands of the Trustees the interest of which goes to the support of the school. The site was given free to the Trustees by Shotts Iron Company. An addition was lately made to the school. The Government contributed part of the funds the remainder was made up by subscription. The school is now visited by Government Inspectors. Mr David Laurence is the present teacher. |

The object which bears this name is an artificial mound wherein was found about 50 years ago several coins and one or two urns containing human bones. Robert Merrilees was one of the workmen employed at that time He is now an old man but intelligent I cannot ascertain to what reign the coins belonged |

There are a number of handwritten notes on this sheet:
The Mote - adopted in accordance with usage. see quotation from [?
The only other memorial of Roman antiquity( the first being that of the Roman Road) is this Tumulus(underlined) near Garrion Bridge, on approaching Garrion Bridge the attention will be assisted by a mound on the edge of the public road marked by a solitary oak tree. When this road was being constructed several years ago, there were considerable quantities of stones around the base of this tumulus(underlined) which had apparently been collected at different periods from the surface of the neighbouring fields. There is no entry on either the name or authority but the following note stretches across the page:
"In proximity to the tumulus, but a little way to the south and near the margin of the river stood the venerable Tower of Garrion, of late years its antique appearance has been greatly concealed by wooden building which have been erected round it. The date of its erection has not been ascertained. Two things however are certain, it is centuries old and in the days alike of Popery and Prelacy, was the favourite summer residence of the Archbishops of Glasgow" - Historical Sketches of Cambusnethan |

Dun signifying "Hill" in the ancient language of this country, and Pace(underlined) "peace" in the language of Rome; the compound word Duni-pace according to this etymology signifies "hill of peace" Fullers gazeteer Vol 1 p 397 |
