012.06 | A village about 2 miles from the eastern boundary of the Parish, having Edinburgh & Glasgow T. P. [Turnpike] Road passing through it. It is chiefly occupied by miners. "Holytown" is a Post Town, and has two schools, an Inn and a Gas Works in it. There also two Smithies in the west end of the village. The name applies from the houses about the corner of the Ph. [Parish] Road passing by "Bairds Square" in the west to "North Howden ", Trace 2, in the east. There is a Quoad Sacra Parish attached to Holytown. The name is corrupted from or derived from Hollowtown, and applied to the houses a little detached from those of the Village, at the west end, about 350 links north of the "Inn". |
