A hole in the River Clyde about 25 feet deep, having a constant eddy. Well known to fishermen. The name is taken from a chapel which is said to have stood where the slopes of the Clydesdale Junction Railway are now. - about 2 chains from the side of the River in Bothwell Parish. At the place written there was, about 10 years ago, an open spring said to be strongly impregnated with Iron. It bore the name "Chapel Eddy Well" while open. Since it has been covered over the name has not been applied, but the spring may be seen issuing itself into the River where the dot is shown on Trace. The proper Eddy is on the Blantyre side of the River, between the side of the water & the first arch. Since the Bridge has been made there is as great an Eddy at each arch as the "Chapel". |

“The principal antiquity in the Parish is the ruin of Blantyre Priory. These are situated on a lofty rock on the banks of the Clyde exactly opposite the ruins of Bothwell Castle.”
New Statistical Account.
“The ruins of Blantyre Priory, which was founded sometime prior to the year 1296, are finely situated in a most retired situation, on the top of a rock which rises perpendicular from the Clyde.”
Fullarton’s Gazetteer.
The walls of the ruins of the Priory are from 4 to 5 links thick, they are built of Freestone. The ruin on the north side of the Priory, shown on Examination Trace in a firm line, is in a better state of preservation than any of the remaining parts. Parts of the window sills & gable ends remain. The gable ends show this part of the Priory to have been not more than one Story high. There are some trees growing within the walls of the ruins, as shown on Trace. The walls standing are entwined with Ivy. There is an arched roof in good preservation, to an irregular shaped portion of a ruin at the south end of the Priory. It appears to have been a cell, being beneath the level of

the ground on the outside - the west, of the ruin. This arch is not seen until upon the side the rocks stand. It is entered from the rock side of the ruins. The space between the arch & the north & south walls it is within, is solid masonry, but it is not seen from the outside being, like other parts of the building, covered by grass. The height of this arch above the ground, on the side where it is entered, is not above five feet. The other sides, around it, are on a level with the top. The east wall of the ruins is built exactly on the edge of a steep rock. The rocks are too perpendicular to shew — longer & steeper, than shown on the Trace. There is a wall on the south, west, & part of the north which appears to have enclosed the Courtyard. It is not more than the ordinary thickness of walls of the present day. The walls which stand above the level of the ground are shewn in a firm thick line. Those level with the surface & beneath it, (shewing the foundations,) are shewn in a dotted line. Much of the ruins was demolished & carted away about 18 years ago by the Farmer of Craigknowe. The proprietor, the Right Honbl. [Honourable] Charles, Lord Blantyre, prevented it as soon as it was known - |

A Bridge over the “Rotten Calder Water” — the Boundary of the Parish, on the T. P. [ Turn Pike] Road between Glasgow & Hamilton. This Bridge is supposed, by the authorities given, to be as old as “Blantyre Priory.” No authentic information can be obtained, relative to its date, or probable date in any accounts of the Parish or the neighbourhood. There is however, a tradition in the neighbourhood of the Bridge. — “That when the building of the “Priory” was finished the Masons employed there were so numerous, that upon each bringing a Stone from the Priory they were sufficient to form the Bridge, which, was built in one night.” The Arch of this Bridge is not as wide as the Road over it. The alteration in the width of the Road, as stated by Mr Jackson of Blantyre Park, was made about 50 years ago. The construction of the Bridge, which is not seen until under the Arch, is supposed to be of a very old

There is a well on the other side of the Rotten Calder (Cambuslang) which, according to tradition, the Queen stopped at for a short time, & which now bears the name "Queen Mary's Well". "The Path" is Public. |

Two thatched houses, one on each side of the Road leading to the Bridge over the “Rotten Calder” - from “Barnhill.” The name is well known, the property of Mrs Bannatyne. The Road between the houses is Public from “Barnhill” to the Bridge. It was formerly a Parish Road, but, for some time, has not been supported by the Parish, owing to the steepness of a brae which lies between “Barnhill” & the “Old Mill”. The continuation of this road in the adjoining Parish (Cambuslang) is held & supported by the Ph. [Parish] Road Trustees of Cambuslang. |

011.14 |
Urns have been dug up in the places marked in the field north east of Shott, known as “Archer’s Croft.” “Some of them were found in a large heap of square stones. In the centre of the heap, square stones were placed so as to form a chest, & the urns were placed within it. They contained a kind of unctuous earthy substance & some remains of bones were scattered around them. A stone coffin of the above description, with an urn standing in one corner of it, was found up at Shott. A skull almost entire was found in it — fragments of six larger urns were found in other parts of the field.” New Statl: [Statistical] Account. As stated by the Proprietor, the urns were found 1826 & 1842. The stone coffin containing the skull, was found at the place marked on Trace. |

A Superior dwelling having a good garden attached, and approached from the Parish Road by a good private road. It is built upon the Site of the Old Mains of Blantyre Priory, a house which, from descriptions given of it, seems, in some measure, to have been a fortified dwelling having a moat around it. The old house (Mains) was taken down, & the present one erected, about 50 years ago, since which time the name “Old Place” has been added, from the old house being, at the time it was pulled down, a very old place, or house. Mains is the original & proper name of the dwelling house at present standing, but it is always coupled with the modern addition “Old Place”. Neither name can be dispensed with from the other, the one being as much used as the other. Lord Blantyre, by agreement made with the Feuar when the Lands of “Mains” were feued, possessed the right of having a room in the house (over

An open Spring well having nothing whatever remarkable in its appearance. It is approached from the Village by a Public foot road which passes the Parish School. The Well is Public property, which according to a Tradition in the locality, was given by one of the Priors of Blantyre Priory to the Villagers & Farmers of the neighbourhood to water their cattle at. It is said that this right is still mentioned in some of the Farmers Leases, but some that have been seen do not confirm this statement. At present it is not used for Cattle. It is considered the best Well in the Village. The oldest of which there appears any writing in the Church Records, is 1693. It is mentioned in reference to a Libel made by a drunken Parishioner against a Stone Mason who had repaired it; the Libeller having said that "James Steel took the Poors money for his own use as also for his saying that Kennings Well was repaired with poors money. Other mention is made referring to the same subject, The spelling of each agrees. The Well is believed to be much older than the date of the Church Records. It is sometimes

called Saint Kennings, but "Saint" is considered an addition not belonging, in any way, to the name. There is no Saint of the name in the Calendar. some ascribe the origin of the name to the Tradition; others to a corruption of Coney - a Rabbit, or Cain - Gaelic, - the clear water. It is pronounced in the neighbourhood Kinnons, or Konnins. The authorities given agree more for sake of the mode given in the Church Records, than from any Knowledge of their own of the proper mode of spelling, or of the origin of the name. |

A good Stone Bridge over the Burnwhich comes from the Farm of Blantyre Park, & which is called "Park Burn" until it is joined by a Burn from Hamilton Parish, which bears the name "Wellshaw Burn" - XI-15 Trace 3. The same authorities for the Bridge, authorize the same name for the Burn from the point described above to where it enters the River Clyde - a distance of not more than 19 chains. This Bridge has always borne the names given, together with the Burn, some slight inclines in the Roads termed braes. From the nature of the object, & the name being a well known name in the neighborhood, it has been applied to the Bridge in preference tothe Burn, as the latter is evidently but the continuation of "Park Burn", & like many other Burns, bears the name while passing through their lands, which in the proprietor's titles bear the name"Whistleberry". The proper application of this name is scarcely known in the Parish. It is, however commonly applied to everything in the neighborhood of the Burn.
There is no house, plantation or other object in this or the [ continued on previous sheet] |

The name is therefore written so as to be apply to both Farms. In the Parish they are commonly called "Park" but Mr. Jackson, Proprietor of the west Farm, insists that his Farm, & Lands belonging to it, are properly "Blantyre Park", & that the east Farm also upon the Lands of "Blantyre Park" as well as the dwelling house situated about 15 chains south east of it. No distinctions are used by the Proprietors of these three properties, each claims the proper name as "Blantyre Park", but in the Parish the distinction "Park" is best known as applying to Mr. Jackson's, &Mr Millers, & " Blantyre Park" To Mrs. Weirs, the house south east of the others. All the other sides are too gradual to represent by a slope. The bottom of the Knowe, - shewn in yellow, now mingles with the other parts of the field that it is difficult to properly define. The name is written on the Examination Trace exactly on the highest part. No remains of a ditch are now to be seen, nor do the Proprietor nor the best authorities in the vicinity know the place where a " Subterranean Structure" described in New Statistical Account was found. A. Jackson, Blantyre Park |
017.03 |
A Burn which rises on the Farm of Blantyre Park, & bears this name from flowing through a bed of Red Sandstone, which commences about the Mineral Well, 017.02 Trace 3, & extends as far as the quarry on the north side of the Parish Road which crosses this Burn. The name by which this Burn generally goes, in this Parish, is "Park Burn", With the exception of the last Authority, there has not been any one found in the Parish, who identifies the Burn, at any part, as "Red Burn". Park Burn would better apply to the whole extent of the Burn as it appears that, however well it may have been known, it is now almost obsolete. |
