OS1/21/2/1 AVONDALE Avondale Ph [Parish] Avondale Ph [Parish] Avondale Ph [Parish] Avondale Ph [Parish] or Strathavon Avondale, or Strathaven Strathavon Avondale New Statistical Acct [Account] Sheriffs Returns Fullartons Gazetteer Chalmers Caledonia Old Statistical Acct [Account] County Map Origines Par [Parochiales] Scotiae 023; 029; 030; 031; 035; 036 Strathavon parish is an extensive district, which is drained by the Upper Avon and its tributary streams. This district obtained its name from the Celtic Strath, a valley, and Avon, a river which runs through it; so that Strathavon signifies the valley of the Avon. By the Scoto-Saxon settlers, it was called Avondale according to the genius of their speech Chalmers "Avondale is bounded on the north by the Parishes of Glassford, and East Kilbride; on the west by Loudoun, Galston, and Sorn; on the south by Muirkirk and Lesmahagow; and on the east by Lesmahagow, Stonehouse and part of Glassford". " The parish is not infrequently named Strathaven or Straven; but Avondale is the proper name. Dale seems to be more descriptive of the face of the Country than Strath. There is a considerable town in the parish named Strathaven; so that now Strathaven is the name uniformly applied to the town, and Avondale to the Parish". New Stat [Statistical] Acct [Account]

On the battlefield of Drumclog this Seminary of education was erected in memory of those Christian heroes who on Sabbath the 1st of June 1679. nobly fought in defence of civil and religious liberty Diew. et mon Droit. Messrs Andrew Hamilton Gavin Hamilton Andrew Young John Young William Donald Robert Hamilton William Hamilton Thomas Smith and others.
OS1/21/2/61 [Page] 61 County of Lanark--Parish of Avondale Examiners comments:- "On Sunday the 1st June 1679, the Covenanters had assembled for devine service at Drumclog, to the number of about 300 armed men. That they might not be suprised by a sudden attack, they placed a watch on "Loudoun Hill". Captain Graham of Claverhouse, afterwards Viscount of Dundee, being apprised of the meeting, marched the morning of the same day, from Hamilton with his Cavalry. They were spied by the watch shortly after they passed Strathaven, who ran and informed their brothers of the approach of the enemy. After prayer, by the minister Mr William Hamilton, who acted likewise as commanding officer, they drew up in order, took their stations, and gave the soldiers a reception very different from what they expected. Thirty of them were killed, Captain Graham had his horse shot under him, and made a very narrow escape. The Covenanters lost only a few men. Their horses were a great incumbrance to the dragoons, the place of action being almost surrounded with "swampy ground". Had the Covenanters pursued their advantage, they might have cut the whole party to pieces." Old S. [Statistical] Accts [Accounts]

[Page] 305 Andrew Hamilton East Drumclog Old Stat [Statistical] Acct. [Account] Vol [Volume] 9 P [Page] 396 & 397. William Leiper Stobbyside 029.08 According to Traditionary accounts the Covenanters assembled for worship at Hairland Hill in the parish of Loudoun on Sunday "1st June 1679". Captain Graham of Claverhouse with three Troops of Dragoons proceeded from Glasgow to disperse them. on his way he took some prisoners near Hamilton. these he marched to Drumclog. The Covenanters hearing of his approach were resolved to release the prisoners. They therefore advanced to meet the military, on arriving near Stobbyside, Captain Graham and his men were in sight and not far off. Captain Graham drew up his men near High Drumclog leaving his prisoners in the farm yard under a Guard. from his position to a small stream some distance westwards there was a gentle declivity. The Covenanters took up their position on the opposite Side of this stream, and from their position likewise to the stream there was a slight declivity. along this stream was a narrow strip of marshy land covered with grass which has since been drained and is now arable land. The Covenanters knew the ground many of them being natives. The military charged and got entangled in the marsh. The Covenanters seeing their position attacked, threw them into disorder, and soon competely routed them. during the engagement and in the retreat there were about 36 of the military killed and but about 5 or 6 of the Covenanters. The forces of the Covenanters amounted to 50 horsemen and as many foot armed with muskets and about 150 armed with spears and forks. Captain Graham narrowly escaped, having his horse killed under him. A monument has been erected on the battlefield, also a school to commemorate the victory gained. There is also an annual meeting held there and sermons preached for a similar purpose. It is said that human bones were dug up some time ago on the battlefield supposed to be the bones of some of the military who fell in the battle.

OS1/21/2/205 Page 205 -Lanarkshire- -Railway Revisions- On our original plans and in our Namelists the spelling for the names of the Parish - Towns - River - and Strath, is Strathavon but on all the later Rail-way revision impressions the name as written to New Railways. Milepath etc is Strathaven which is the correct spelling- M Carsons Captain R.S. 3 Mar 1869 Captain James Royal Engineers- On Railway Time Table map only. C.J.F. O S Earlston 8 Mar 1869 "Strathaven" is the only way of spelling this name, which I could obtain from any of the Railway Company's Documents. It is so spelt in the Act of Parliament for constructing the railway & all other Documents of the Company, also on the name board at Strathaven Station, & also in all Time Tables. This is the only information I can give respecting it. Charles J Fearnside 2nd Corp. [Corporal] R E. [Royal Engineers] Captain Parsons Royal Engineers
OS1/21/2/206 This is a copy of the Glasgow, Hamilton and Strathaven Branch train timetable.
OS1/21/2/207 Captain Parson's. Corporal Fearnside appears by his explanation, to have had sufficient reasons for adopting Strathaven. His only success, however to have required from the Railway authorities, and the orthopraphy in Railway time tables he is by no means infallible. Would it not be better to examine the original name sheets, in order to see whether you would not be justified in adopting its newer method of spelling? As the Railway Co [Company] has adopted it, it is probable it will in course of time be generally adopted in the neighbourhood. Edward R James Capt. [Captain] R.E. [Royal Engineers] 9 Mar 1869 Capt [Captain] James I have examined the name book: this town is in the parish of Avondale, the authorities seem in favour of Strathavon, including Johnstons & Forrests County maps & Chalmers Caledonia. I think we had better leave it as approved Strathavon & alter Cor [Corporal] Fearnside's railway names here, accordingly,- will you please return this for insertion in name book. R M Parsons CRE [Captain Royal Engineers] 15 Mar 1869 Captain Parsons. Noted and returned. Edward R. James Capt. [Captain] R.E.
