A small chalybeate Spring on the farm of Merkland. It appears to be thoroughly impregnated with oxide of iron and is said to be very diuretic and an excellent restorer of appetite, it is also effectual in removing agues stomach complaints and nervous disorders. Having Summer and the beginning of autumn it is much resorted to by persons in the ordinary and humble walks of life. See Stat Acct of Co [Statistical Account of County], published 1845 page 287. In Sinclairs Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [volume] 2 P 38 mention is made of this well as follows " There is a mineral spring in the parish called Merkland Well of the chalybeate kind: a very effectual remedy in agues complaints of the stomach and all nervous disorders; but fatal in consumptions. It is exceeding by light very diuretic and an excellent restore of the appetite. Though this accommodation has been always indifferent yet this water was formerly resorted to during the summer months by persons of rank & fortune. Of late years its reputation has rather declined." |

The site of an ancient castle on the farm of Auchenfranco, it is enclosed by a fosse or trench in the form of a Rhombus, and at the Eastern corner of which is an opening where it is supposed that a draw bridge had been. No remains of the Castle or building now stands, but the present farmer of Auchenfranco says that about 25 years ago small portions of the walls were standing which he and his workmen removed for the purpose of building some offices, fences, &c. Its present appearance would indicate that it has at [one] time been a place of great strength. |

A tolerably sized lake of an irregular oblong shape, it is of an average depth of 12 feet and is supplied by Merkland Burn, a few other small streams and springs within itself. It abounds with pike, perch, and eels, also trout have been caught in it. Near the centre of it is a small island of a circular form which seems to have been artificial, over its whole surface is accumulation of stones resting on a frame of oak planks, and on the centre of this island is a Trigl. [Triangulation] station called by that party "Lochfoot Island". Out of the Northern side of this lake issues a small stream or burn which after flowing a short distance takes the name "Cargen Water". |
