John Hope says that it is [handed] down by tradition that it was [erected] at the expence of Lady [Dervorgilla] daughter of Allan Lord of [Galloway] in or about the 13th Centuary This tradition is very generally [received] in the locality. Mr Welsh Provost of Maxwelltown says that the [tradition] is very generally believed but that the bridge underwent some alterations & repairs [often]
