027 [Situation] About 1 1/8 miles E. [East] of Lochfoot.
This object consists of 9 Stones and is apparently an ancient Druidical Temple or circle. [the] stones are placed in a circular [position] except one which is a [little] removed from its proper place There was formerly a stone in the centre of this circle which was removed some years ago. It is considered by [all] the intelligent persons in the neighbourhood to [be] a Druidical temple. The stones are Granite [and] present a gray appearance on account of which [they] are sometimes called the Gray Stones or 7 Gray [stones] Some of the stones are yet in an upright position others are [fallen] & lying flat. The diameter of the circle is about 72 feet. & is [situated] on a small hillock on the side of a slight range of hills [on] elevated ground which commands a good view of the surrounding [country]. - In the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Kirkcudbrightshire publd [published] 1845 is the following notice of this object, "The vestiges of a Druidical temple is to be seen upon a hill at the eastern extremity of the parish. This spot is called the Seven Gray Stones; though, in fact there are nine stones surrounding a rising ground, and forming a circle of seventy feet diameter."
