One receiving office for letters in connection with Dumfries [post] Office, a tolerably good Butcher Market, several provisions shops, and one Booksellers Shop, There are [also] Several Nurseries around the Burgh, and some gardens which partly Supply vegetables to the Markets of [Dumfries]. The population in 1841 appears to be [3230], Maxwellton was erected into a parish Quoad Sacra in 1834 [by] Authority of the General Assembly. |
