027 | [Situation] At the South end of the town of Maxwelltown A circular building Situated on part of the high ground called Corbelly Hill. It was built in 1797 for a windmill & used as such in 1836 it was purchased at the joint expence of a number of Shareholders for the purpose of an astronomical observatory & partly for a museum. The lower Story is used as a dwelling of a person entrusted with the Care of it. who is also paid 6 Shillings a week for his Services. The upper part is appropriated to the use of the museum & apparatus belonging to the observatory, in it is a Telescope the magnifying power of which is about 80 there are many other philosophical instruments, Such as a microscopic Camera obscura, etc A Statue of old Mortality & his poney is placed in the garden, The garden is handsomly laid out & well planned |
