It serves its Source principally from Springs within itself, and other small tributaries the principal of which is "Kilnare Burn". On an Islet in its centre stands the ruins of a fortified Castle which belonged to the Gordons, "Lords of Lochinvar" subsequently Viscounts Kenmore. In very dry Weather the Castle can be gained by wading upon two narrow paths leading from the North & West sides of the Loch, these are supposed to be roads which formerly led to it. This Loch abounds with a famed species of red Trout. |

James Fauld
James Barbour |
016 |
[Situation] About 3/4 mile S.[South] of Bogue Fell.
This name applies to the site of an old Chapel which is supposed to have been built in the time of Pope Gregory 7th. This supposition is derived from the fact of finding a Stone in the immediate vicinity of this site with the inscription POPE G.7. inscribed upon it. This stone is now removed to Bogue Cottage. (see remark)
"In the farm of Bogue is shown a flat stone of no great size on which is inscribed P.G.VII which is supposed to have been the foundation stone of a little chapel built in the time of Pope Gregory VII of which no other vestige now remains: but as in the same farm there is a place called Chapel Yard, as in the farm of Cleugh there was some years ago, a dwellinghouse called the Chapelwalls and as in many other parts of this Country there are standing houses or vestiges of houses which still bear the name of Chapels it is manifest that these have been very frequent." The supposed site of a Grave yard in which is also pointed out the site of a chapel see page 35 on the farm of Bogue.
It is handed down by tradition that it had been built by Pope Gregory 7th. The probability of this is that a Stone was found in the above ground with the inscription, Pope G.7 imperfectly inscribed upon one of its sides. The Stone is now placed at Bogue Cottage which is situate near to Bogue Toll Bar. |

A small eminence on the farm of Bogue which is chiefly Rough pasture. This name originate from the following circumstance. In former times it was a Customary practice for farmers Milking their Ewes. Two Girls whose Surnames were Grame and Ramsey (Domestics in Bogue farm house) and a young Shepherd called Grame (brother to one of the females) was out Collecting the Ewes to the Bughts for the purpose of the young Women to Milk them, possibly the Shepherd had been longer than his wonted time of arriving with them. As the two Girls had lay down on this Bank and fell fast asleep. As the Shepherd approached he observed something creeping into the Mouth of his favourite Mary Ramsey, which he instantly awoke them & immediately got about a scotch pint of milk drawn from the Ewes & sternly ordered Mary, to drink it. She drank it and immediately vomited up a Snake. The Shepherd drew it instantly away & buried it in a Moss which was at hand, even R.& his own sister saw not it. Not many Months afterwards Grame & his Sweetheart got married &, as soon as the secret was told her by her husband she immediately fevered & died. |
