Westerly through a Wild hilly Country until it receives Stroanfreggan Burn, here it becomes much larger, and takes nearly a Westerly direction as far as College Linn (a beautiful and romantic Waterfall) from thence. its Course is more Southerly, passing though College Glen, Glenhoul Glen (a safe retreat for the Covenanters during the days, wherein they were persecuted) It now receives the Water of Deugh, which adds Considerably to its size and flowing in a Southerly direction over Carlston Linn (a beautiful Waterfall) passing by St John's Village (in Dalry), and Spalding Inn where the road from New Galloway to Dumfries Crosses by a handsome Granite Bridge of 5 large Arches. A short distance below this Bridge it enters Loch Ken which is nearly the expansion of the river into the Character of a Lake, at the N. [North] West end of which stands Kenmore Castle embracing in one view the Ancient and Modern Styles of Architecture. The Loch of Ken flows into the River Dee at the Boattie Rhone. (See description.)
