[South West] of East Kirkarsell A small village situated about 5 miles south east of Kirkcudbright, the houses are feued from the Estates of Mr. Ferguson of Orroland and Mr. Maitland of Dundrennan. The houses which are chiefly two stories high have been built with stones taken from the Abbey, the population is about 160 consisting of agricultural labourers, mechanics and shopKeepers, two schools (the Parish and Free church) two Inns and a branch Post Office which communicates with Kirkcudbright daily |
