050 | [Situation] Near the North end of St Mary's Street, at the NNE [North North East] end of the town. A large and handsome Edifice of the modern Gothic style of Architecture, built in 1848 at a cost of £2500 (which was left, besides a considerable [mortgage] fund for the endowment of the the Teachers) by the late William Johnston Esqr. who left it under the Superintendance of the Free Church, and the rules of admittance is, that the parents of the Children must be natives of the parish or otherwise residents 7 years prior to the admittance of their children (there is no restrection to Sects) The average number of scholars is about 250 who are taught free of any fees, in it are taught the ordinary branches of education, taught in in English Schools including Mathematics, Classics etc. There are two Teachers a male & a female. The former has a Salary of £100 and the female Teacher £50. This school is surrounded by a large portion of playground for the Children. The property of the Free Church Congregation. The Edifice is surmounted by a squared tower used as belfry. - |
