050 | [Situation] On the N [North] side of High St. near the Southern side of the town. The Site of an old church which tradition still recollects which appears was surrounded by a Grave Yard. The new jail is built on the site or at least part of the site of the Church See Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] of Kirkt [Kirkcudbright] 1845 page 21. It appears this Church & churchyard became the property of Sir Thomas Maclellan of Bombie soon after the reformation. As it appears by a record of the burgh that Sir Thomas Maclellan in the year 1570 Sold the Friars' church and the church of St Andrews with their churchyards to the Magistrates Council, and community of Kirkcudbright See Sinclair's Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol II P 28. St Andrews church was within the town and in this Situation occupied by the new jail. It possessed a burying ground for within the last 50 years human bones have been found in the gardens near the Site of the ancient building. Nicholsons Hist [History] of Galloway vol [volume] I P.
