050 | [Situation] Crossing the river on the NW [North West] side of the town of Kirkcudbt [Kirkcudbright]. A passage of the River Dee where a Boat is stationed for the use of Conveying passengers etc a cross the river. The boat is flat bottomed and of an oblong shape, to each end of it is attached by hinges and suspended by chains a broad platform or pathway, which all kinds of vehicles can enter with as much ease as if travelling on a common road, The boat is commodious and can hold at once 4 Carts with their horses attached or two Carriages & one gig. It is moved along a chain by a crank wrench. The rent of the Ferry & Boathouse is £140. The property of the Burgh of Kirkcudbright. |
