050 The site of the ancient Castle of Kirkcudbright which tradition points out of it having stood here - and that it was inhabited alternately by Fergus Lord of Galway, and John Balliol who married his daughter and Co-heiress Dornagella [Dervorguilla], and afterwards, by Archibald Douglas who seems to have been the last inhabitant. Sinclair in his Stat Acct [Statistical Account] states King James 4th gave a grant of the Castle and ? pertaining to it to the Burgh of Kirkcudbright and that he was here himself, and was hospitably entertained by the Burgh - Mr Nicholson says that after the Castle went to ruins that stones were brought from it to build the present one
