050 [Situation] In the eastern side of St. Cuthbert's Church Yard.
A small square tablet of Stone, supported upon 4 pillars, and raised about 2 1/2 feet above the ground. It was, to the memory of two Martyr'es named William Hunter & Robert Smith who were hanged for their adherence to Scotland's Solemn League & Covenants by Capt. [Captain] Douglas Bruce & Graham of Claverhouse. The Stone bears the following inscription This Monument shall shew posterity Two headless Martyries, underneath doth lye, By bloody Graham were taken & surprised, Brought to this toune & afterwards were saized By unjust law were sentenced to die Them first they hanged, then headed cruelly Captain Douglas, Bruce, Graham of Claverhouse Were these that caused them be handled thus An when they were unto the Gibbet come To stop there Speech, they did beat up the Drum And all because that they would not comply With indulgence & bloody prelacie In face of cruel Bruce Douglas & Graham They did Mantaine that Christ was Lord Supreme And boldly owned both the Covenants At Kirkcudbright thus ended these two Saints. -
