050 [Situation] About 15 chains E by N [East by North] of the town of Kirkcudbright.
A Grave yard Situate about 1/2 mile North East of the Burgh of Kirkcudbright. It is well enclosed by a Stone built wall, and is handsomely Ornamented with monumental Stones etc. One of which points out the cemetery belonging to the Earl of Selkirk, Near the North West Corner is another Small Monument standing upright about 2 1/2 feet above ground bearing the following inscription. "The remains of William Marshall, Tinker who died 20th November 1792 at the advanced age of 120 years" On the reverse side of the Stone are hollowed out the figure a Rams-horns & two horn Spoons in the form of a Cross. It is traditionally handed down that this Tinker was King of the Gipsies. Also in the grave yard are two small ancient monuments covering the dust of 3 Martyrs who were hanged by Grahame of Cleverhouse and Captain Douglas, of which see description). The Grave yard was recently enlarged by a Contract between the magistrates [of] the burgh and the presbytery of KirKcudbright. It is approached by an Avenue, from the road leading from Kirkcudbright to Auchencairn, and an Archway entrance, upon the Centre and each side of the Arch are placed respectively Continued [on next page]
