050 [Situation] On the S. [South] side of High St. and the S.W. [South West] side of the town.
A tolerable large ancient building erected upward of 100 years ago and Occupied as the burgh & County Gaol up to the year 1815 when it was superseded by a more commodious one which is Situated about 50 yards to the East and close to the rear of High Street (of which see description). The Old gaol, the ground floor contains a lock up a fire engine room and Store rooms. The upper apartment contains a Billiard room a reading room & remainder used for Military stores. It has a square tower surmounted by a conical Spire, and contains 3 Bells one of them dated 1646 and a clock (with two faces) of very Antique workmanship supposed to be of the same date as the building. It is situated at the Market cross and commands a good view of the northerly line of High Street, and built in line along with the Southerly side of the Eastern Line of the Same Street, And is the property of the Burgh. -
