050 | [Situation] About 4 chains S.W. [South West] of High Street. A large and Substantial Edifice of the Modern Style of Architecture consisting of three large Class rooms and a Library, it has a kind of piazza or portico, in front for the use of Scholars in bad weather. It was built in 1815 at a cost of about 1129 pounds, and the expense of its erection was partly defrayed by Subscriptions from the friends of the institution, its Site with about an acre of ground adjoining, was presented to the Magistrates, by the late Lord Selkirk, and placed under the patronage of the Magistrates and town Council of the Burgh. In the class rooms respectively are taught 1st in the Grammar department are taught Latin, Greek, French. and Geography etc the teacher of which has an annual Salary of £63 exclusive of fees. 2d in the Commercial department are taught Mathematics, Navigation, Geography, Bookkeeping, Arithmetic, Writing etc. The teacher received an annual salary of £50 and thirdly in the English department are taught History, Geography, Composition and the principles of the English Language, the teacher of which has an annual salary of £50 exclusive of Fees. The average number of scholars attending is about 150, whose fees vary from 2/6 [£0.2.6] to 7/6 [£0.7.6] p [per] Quarter. |
