050 [Situation] Near the W. [West] side of St Mary's St. and the Eastern side of the town of Kirkcudbright.
A large and handsome Edifice of the Gothic Style of Architecture with tower surmounted by an elegant spire used as belfry, built in 1830 at a cost of about £7000. £2565 of which were paid by the corporation for a Specified number of Sittings, and the remainder was defrayed by the Earl of Selkirk. The corporation was assisted by liberal Subscriptions from wealthy natives, living in England & the colonies & in North America etc. Its interior is well fitted up with three spacious gallaries sufficient to accommodate with Sittings about 1500, the burgh possesses 608 sittings which seat rents are exacted for all (with the exception of a small number for the accommodation of the poor) but only about 1/2 of them are let. No seat rents are exacted for the landward heritors, the trades possesses one of the gallaries for which £150 was bequeathed by Miss Gordon of Threave Mains to enable them to erect the gallary for the accommodation of themselves and families. The average number of hearers are about 1000, Communicants 600,the Minister is the Rev. [Reverend] J. Underwood whose stipends amounts to 19 Chalders of Grain exclusive of a Glebe of 9 acres of good arable land, and £50 per year for house rent as no Manse belongs to the church. The tower of Church Contains an excellent Bell and a clock with 3 faces, which is calculated to go 30 hours, and has a maintaining power to propel it while being wound up. It was made by a native artist of the town, and cost £100, and was presented along with the Bell to the Burgh by James Lennox Esqr of Dalskairth.
