050 [Situation] Betwixt the North end of High St. & Castle St. an near the Centre of the town.
A large Castle (in ruins) built in the year 1582 (on the site of a Convent) by Thomas McLellan of Bombie who was then ancestor of the Lords of Kirkcudbright. It is a strong Gothic building lifting its Upper works so boldly into view, as to give conjointly with the tower of the New and Old Jail, Parochial & Free Church, a distinctiveness and markedness of feature to the burghal landscape, and, at the time when it was built, it must have been a splendid as it is still a spacious but roofless edifice. Above its principal entrance is the armorial bearing of the McLellans of Bombie. It retained its roof untill the year 1752, and is also supposed to have been built with the Stones of which had been removed from the Castles of Bombie & Castle dykes. It is the property of the Earl of Selkirk. This Castle is Situated at the Northern terminations of Castle St. & High St.
