050 | [Situation] Forming the W [West] and Southern part of the town of Kirkcudbright. A large and Spacious Street going off from the Moat Brae, or ratherly branching off St. Cuthberts St, and running in a Southerly direction for about 300 yards to a point called the "Market Cross" thence changing its course and runs due East over a distance of about 360 yards, from the Southward line of High Street, Castle St. runs parallel with it and to the East of it, from nearly the River Side to the Eastward line of High St. Union Street connects the parallel thoroughfares nearly at their Middle, in the manner of the connecting Stroke between the limbs of the letter H. High St. though irregularly built Contains not a few of Spacious edifices. It is winged on both side of both its lines with closes or narrow alleys, it also contains numerous hard & Software Shops, public houses, the Old & New Jails the Court house. Market Cross & a branch Office of the Bank of Scotland etc. The Street is well drained and Macadamized with a paved causeway on each side.- |
