MOAT (Ancient) | Moat | John Smith n & s Kirkland John Wilson n&s Sandyhills Charles Dee n&s Boreland |
An Ancient Moat on the farm of Boreland its shape is an irregular oval And it is partly of an natural and partly of Artificial Construction, on its surface which is tabular is a small dwelling house, with an enclosed garden attached to it - The tabular surface is surrounded by a steep slope of about 25 links broad and about one chain or so outside of the same, on the East West and North Sides of it, is the track of an old drain - possibly part of a Fosse by it might formerly have been encircled - but this is mere conjecture by the building & enclosure On its outworks are mostly all defaced and there is no tradition in the locality respecting the period of its erection or whether it has been of British - or Roman construction |
