[Situation] About 1½ miles N.N.W. [North North West] of Newfield farm house
A large stone of about 10 feet in height situated in an arable field about 20 chains N.W. [North-West] of Townhead of Torrkatrine farm house, it is not known by any particular name. although some of the intelligent persons in the neighbourhood is of opinion that it is of a druidical construction. This opinion of the people in the locality does not deserve much credit. It does not appear to be the remains of a Druidical temple as there are no other stones near it of the Kind & it is far larger than any stones which we found in Galloway forming a Druidical temple. It is plain it is not the remains of a cranloch. It is very likely a Stone of memorial to mark the spot where some event of importance took place and is of the same class as the [cat] Stones found in so many parts of Britain. |
